13 tips for international students on keeping safe in Queensland
We had to learn duties for being Queensland international student ambassadors and safe travel tips for Queensland Australia in Brisbane. Today, I want to share some safety tips we learned from Queensland Police.
Since this is my first visit to a foreign country, those tips were very helpful and made me become more cautious about my safety. I am sure these tips will help not only first time visitors to Australia to keep themselves safe, but also those who traveled a lot to many other countries, because safety can never be over-emphasised.
It is obvious these tips can't protect you 100%, but you will be far much safer with those.
<호주 경찰에게 들은 "외국 어디서든 나를 안전하게 지킬 수 있는 13가지 tip!"> Queensland police tell 13 tips for how to travel safely in Queensland
Remove your earphones from your ear when you walk on the streets. You don't know what's going on around you when you walk on the street if you have your earphones blocking sound from potential dangers.
Look at the cars when you cross the road. In Korea, driver's seat is on the left side, while Australian's is on the right side. If you are from the countries with left driver seat, be careful when you cross the road. You should face the car while you are crossing, not having cars at your back.
Tell your friends or host families where you are going and when you are coming back when you go out at night. They can call the police instead of you if they know you are in trouble, so always tell somebody where you are going and what time you are coming back.
Shout out loud if you encounter danger. Try your best to scream or shout as you wish to be listed in the Guinness book of world records. That will attract people's attention to your situation and the criminal may run away.
Never put your drink on the table without your monitoring. You wanted to say hello to your freind in the bar, so you put your drink on the table and turned your back on it. After greeting, you returned to your drink, but you never know if it's the same drink as you had have before. This is called "drink-spiking". Somebody put something in your drink and you can be fainted. Even bartenders can put something in it, so it is a good idea watchig them while they make your drink.
Don't take drinks from strangers. Similar to number 5, you never take any drinks from any strangers. It is always easy to say "Thank you but no thank you.". Don't take it because it's free.
Swim between the flags. Beautiful beaches everywhere in Queensland, so you wanna jump in anywhere in the beach. However, you should swim between the red and yellow flags to let the life guards can see you when you are in trouble. There is no life guards out side of flags watching you, so keep your safety rules in the beach.
Your money is worthless compare to your safety. If you encounter robbery, one of the safest ways is, you know now, scream. Here is the second tip. Give them everything you have. They could just go away if you give them money. Be wise.
Safe places in transports. In buses, the safest place is near the driver and in train, it's near the doors. Late at night, there are not many people in transports, so it could be dangerous if you are with someone who you don't know in the back of the bus, out side of the driver's view. Therefore, always let drivers see you or stay near doors in the train. Also, there are emergency bells near some doors in the trains, so stay close to those bells, but don't push it unless you want to see if security is handsome or not.
Lock the windows or doors well. No one doesn't know that they should lock the doors or windows well, but you have to do the basic well. There are lots of houses instead of apartments in Queensland, so there are many doors and windows. You have to make sure if all of those are closed. Especially, don't forget to lock the back yard door.
Don't carry valuable or improtant things with you at night. It is easy to loose them at night when you having fun in the parties or you can be the target of robbery.
Ask to see their IDs when they come to you and say they are police. It is your right to see their IDs to make suer if they are real police or not. It is not rude to say, "Excuse me, may I see your police ID?". They will certainly show you if they are police, the guard of the people who live in Queensland. The point is not to see their badges, but their photos and names. You have to make sure if it's him or her.
In Koea, emergency police call for 112 and fire call for 119, but it's 000 for both!
Queensland is comparatively safe place for travlers and people who live here, but you are the one who should take care of yourself. Be safe in Queesland!
